Experimental Investigation of Tool Steel M2 Coating on Mild Steel by Friction Surfacing

Friction surfacing is an emerging surface engineering technology, developed on the basic principle of friction welding, for depositing wear and corrosion resistant metallic coatings. In the present work coating of tool steel M2 were made on mild steel by friction surfacing by using 2 factorial designs with 3 factors at two levels for each. Process parameters developed a satisfactory deposition of tool steel coating. Coating microstructure is examined using optical microscopy and primary inspection methods. The results shows that coating width is a strong function of mechtrode rotating speed, while coating thickness is mainly dependent on substrate transverse speed.
